Credentials

Dr. Medalie is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who originally hails from the east coast, having grown up in Washington D.C. and lived in both Boston and New York City. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and then studied art in New York City at Parsons School of Design and the Art Student’s League, prior to entering Cornell University Medical College. After his third year of medical school, he spent a year in Paris conducting research, returning to Cornell for his fourth year to receive his Doctorate of Medicine with early membership in the honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. At graduation, he and two classmates were recognized as the top three medical students in the graduating class. He then received the honor of being the first physician ever accepted into the new and highly regarded University of Pittsburgh Medical Center integrated plastic surgery training program. This comprehensive program combines six years of general and plastic surgery training with two additional years of intensive research.  Dr. Medalie decided to spend those two years at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Shriners Burns Institute as a surgical research fellow studying gene therapy and skin tissue engineering.

Upon completion of his training, he was appointed assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He remained there as an attending surgeon and director of the burn/wound clinic for three years prior to moving to Cleveland to be closer to family. For the next 4 years, he served as an assistant professor at University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and Chief of plastic surgery at the Cleveland VA Medical Center. He is now pleased to announce his  full time affiliation with Metrohealth Medical Center in Cleveland and the Cleveland Clinic (adjunct teaching faculty) and his continued affiliation with Case Western Reserve Medical School.

Scheduling Surgery for Out-of-Town Patients

Dr. Medalie frequently performs surgery on patients who live out of town and are unable to come in for a consultation prior to their surgery. In this case, we ask that you complete a medical history and physical form (please contact our office for instructions). Typically as your surgery date approaches, you will have a phone consultation with Dr. Medalie so he can explain the procedure in detail. After your surgery you will be required to stay in town for at least another day in case a complication arises. All stitches used for the procedure dissolve on their own. Patients who live far away, but can drive to Cleveland (2-6 hrs.), can go home the next day and drive back to see Dr. Medalie for their first post-operative appointment in around 10-14 days. From that point we will follow your progress via e-mail.
